Thread Miles: Why does the source of thread matter?
Thread Count
I was watching a Loic Prigent video on the a Chanel show (can't find the precise one, but a link to his articulate channel is here), and he saluted Chanel's commitment to sustainability through minimizing the number of what-I-call "thread miles", i.e. the geo source of the individual threads used to weave their proprietary tweed fabric.
Chanel weaves all it's tweeds in house, with each individual thread carefully sourced from a variety of locations. Bravo you say, Chanel will go to the ends of the earth for the correct thread. I;m glad they've realised that such tunnel vision could cause the end of the earth itself, as every mile commissioned to transport the multitude of threads, from Thai silk farms to Scottish wool mills, adds an unnecessary and debilitating volumetric measure of CO2 to the atmosphere.
It's the same logic of "food miles" but with thread and fabric, the more local the source, the smaller the carbon footprint in creating the final piece.
